How do I use Avacaster with JAWS?

Launching the player

JAWS (Job Access With Speech) is a screen reader software program for the visually impaired.

On opening the Avacaster player webpage a small pop up window is quickly opened and closed to test if pop up windows are blocked. You can ignore this. This is what you will hear as this test window is opened and closed:

"New browser window.
Blank page flash windows Internet Explorer.
Address edit combo about colon blank.
Zero items.
To set the value use the arrow key or set the value.
One hundred per cent.
About colon blank."

You will then hear:

"New browser window."

And then you will hear:

"Avacaster event colon."

Plus the name of your event.

You can then use the tab key to get to the link to launch the class. The number of times you will have to hit the tab key will depend on your web browser. You will know you are on the correct link when you hear:

"Flash version is page link."

After you have used the tab key to get past any browser buttons, this is what you will hear when you are on the webpage:

"Tab.
Player preflight link.
Tab.
Table, column four, row two. Shockwave version is page link.
Tab.
Flash version is page link."

You can click enter to launch the class when you hear:

"Flash version is page link."

In the player

If you are entering an archived event, you can tab to the video play/pause button. Hit tab and you will hear:

"Tab. Ten button."

Hit tab again and you will hear:

"Tab. Twelve button."

This is the play/pause button. Click enter to pause or play the video. Hit tab again and you will hear:

"Tab. 14 button."

This is the question/comment button. Clicking enter will open the question/comment box and place your cursor in it, allowing you to type in a question or comment. Clicking enter again will automatically send your question/comment, and close the question/comment box.

There are no more usable buttons in an archived event after this point. Clicking tab twenty-seven more times will bring you back to the beginning.

At any point you can use the up and down arrows to read text on the slide, or in the chat room.
